  The dilemma is that Roe versus Wade is the law of the land.
  No doubt, having listened to testimony yesterday in the reauthorization of the Violence Against Women Act, there is no lack of sympathy and understanding and empathy for the outrageous violence that occurs against women almost daily and, in fact, by the minute: violence against women in the workplace, sexual violence, and domestic violence. I am outraged, and I think all women have a great deal of empathy for the unchecked or unfettered violence that occurs even with the very unanimously supported
  legislation like the Violence Against Women Act.

  The one thing I want to remember most about PAUL is that quick, genuine, and, at times, child-like smile he had. It seemed a bit whimsical, sometimes a bit tired, a bit resigned, at first glance; but on closer observation, that smile was always full of understanding, compassion, and insight into the difficulties we face. PAUL's smile was never silly or false but frequent, wise, encompassing, and in empathy and comprehension for our frailties, completely knowing our weaknesses and
  encapsulating the precariousness of our human and political condition. Yes, it was fresh and child-like and frequently given; yet in that smile was great strength. There was a kind of understanding there that was born of experience, study, insight, and concern. Moreover, because it was founded on an honest appreciation of our present condition in this life, its warmth, its humanity never failed to inspire.

  And they don't know the names hardly of the people with whom they are dealing. They have no concern or empathy to really deal with the problems in that family. And we also know, from statistics, that the largest cause of marital breakup in America is financial problems. We need to do better about that.

  Addressing this situation is vitally important to this community and its future. It is an important priority for our country. Even President Bush mentioned in his energy strategy this tragedy. I have requested assistance from the chairman. This is the first time I have come to the gentleman from New York asking for assistance in this manner. I was anticipating being intimidated by the gentleman. He met me with sympathy and empathy. I am very grateful for that kind of response. I appreciate the
  gentleman indicating his willingness to assist and provide support as this bill goes to a House-Senate conference.

  Currently, we authorize in the farm bill about 250,000 acres for the Wetland Reserve Program. And I understand how difficult it has been for the subcommittee and the chairman and the staff to squeeze all of the requests into the amount of money that they have been allocated in this appropriation bill, so I have a great deal of empathy for the problems that they have. But I wanted to come to the floor today to offer an amendment to restore to 250,000 acres the overall authorization for the Wetland
  Reserve Program.

  Mr. CORKER. Mr. President, it is a pleasure to be back here this week. I hope the Presiding Officer and his family have a wonderful holiday season when we leave tomorrow. I rise today to talk about the proposed automaker bailout. I have tremendous empathy for all of the people involved. I spent most of my life in business. I am sure these CEOs and others leading these companies are going through tumultuous times. I empathize with them.
  
  In my beginning period, I was a card-carrying union member. I know there are a lot of workers who are very concerned about their future. I have tremendous empathy for them and their families. This is actually a very serious time in our history. Regardless of where you are, people are concerned about the future. I was in other parts of the world last week. All around the world, people are concerned about the future.
  
  I have tremendous empathy for the people involved. One of these companies has a plant in our State. But I say to my colleagues, the worst thing we could possibly do in this situation is to acquiesce to this request that lacked coherence, lacked thoughtfulness, lacked a plan as to how these companies would be successful in the future, and let them go about their business in the way that they have been going about it. They will be back, if this money is granted. I hope we will stand firm,

  After serving her country 8 years as First Lady, when most people would retire, HILLARY stepped up and has served as a vital and powerful advocate on behalf of the people of New York. Going from the White House to White Plains, HILLARY has continued to show as much acumen in her dealings with national and global leaders as she shows empathy and interest in the needs of private individuals around New York.

   I have great empathy for our brave members of our military who suffer from emotional distress, and I admire the nurses and other health care professionals who work to assist them. Nurses are a key component of our health care system; and whether on the battlefield, at sea, in a skilled nursing facility or in a hospital, the care that a nurse provides is very, very valuable.
