2010-06-05 Meeting at the Richmond Art Center - Report

Announcement:

This is just a short message to let you know that Hershell West has arraigned for a project meeting for TAOLB: Artists Building a Culture of Empathy to be held after the annual Richmond Art Center (RAC) members meeting next weekend.  Everyone is invited; artists, art supporters, anyone interested in building a culture of empathy, etc. Take part in the RAC festivities (BBQ and food)  and then meet to form the empathy project planning team.

We will have a short meeting to discuss the project and see what directions to go and develop a leadership team. There should be some follow-up announcements from TAOLB shortly. Here are some long links.

Richmond Art Center - June  5,  Member's annual meeting, noon, BBQ at 1pm http://www.therac.org/html/calendar.html

Meeting Report:
We met at the Richmond Art Center in West Gallery.

In Attendance

Anna Edwards
Edwin Rutsch
Hershell West
Joan Kuenz
Marva
Mike Warner
Sandi Genser - Maack
Steven Hopkins

The goal of the meeting was to start forming a leadership team and to come up with some activities for the group to do. Several people said they couldn't be there for various reasons, conflicts with open studios for one.

Joan liked the idea of holding a conference in Richmond on empathy. Inviting the various organizations, non profits, etc to attend and to do this for community building.

Sandi was interested in community organizing.

The question of 'what is empathy?' came up.

The meeting seemed inconclusive to me. It was unclear on how to more forward and to get more people involved in forming the direction of the project and taking leadership roles. Perhaps we were thinking to big and need to start small with a couple of smaller events.

The latest plan is that Hershell will check with the RAC and his contacts at Mills College for meeting space. We will then hold a couple of World Cafe style art events (Empathy Art Cafes) with whoever wants to take part.  Hershell thinks he should be able to find out about space availability by June 10 and will report back. Perhaps holding several of these Empathy Art Cafes will get the ball rolling.
