Culture of Empathy Builder:  Irmtraud Kauschat

Irmtraud Kauschat & Edwin Rutsch: Dialogs on How to Build a Culture of Empathy with NVC

Irmtraud Kauschat is a medical doctor in Germany who works with alternative medicine, Compassionate Communication (NVC) and restorative conflict processes. She uses empathy in her medical practice and has done conflict mediation in Kenya.

Empathy is like creating bridges between people.  The opposite is like a big river between people where they are separated.

Irmtraud Kauschat & Edwin Rutsch: Dialogs on How to Build a Culture of Empathy with NVC

Which ways do you know to express empathy/connect with people empathetically?

  • silent empathy

  •  the classical NVC way, guessing feelings and needs especially

  • empathic listening

  •  empathic listening in big groups as a way to reconciliation

How to Build a Culture of empathy?

  •  empathy in the healthcare system, recognizing patients as experts of their life,
for example patients tell me: I have observed this or that, other doctors told me, "this can't be"

  • not seeing a human being as "my enemy",
this can be politicians, members of a different faith like Muslims, etc.
